But What Is Self-Care Really?
There’s a lot of noise around what ‘self-care‘, is supposed to look like. Mood lighting, long bubble baths, fresh manicure, hours in the hairdressers chair and don’t get me wrong f that’s your thing, enjoy every second of it. However, choosing the ways in which we feel good isn’t a one-size-fits-all, and it doesn’t need to be approved by anyone else.
Do the things that make you feel good. If that means spending money on botox every few months (guilty) then do it, and don’t carry any shame about it. Your version of feeling your best doesn’t have to look productive, deep, or even relatable to anyone else. It just has to work for you and make you feel good.
Not everyone finds restoration in the same places. For some, it’s a full day of pampering. For others, it’s a gym session, a walk, or a night out. For some of us, it’s much quieter than that and much simpler.
My version? It’s Botox every few months, yes, but it’s also a Sunday reset. A full house clean, fresh bedding and then washing my hair at the end of it all, knowing everything around me is done and my clean hair is going to lay down on a clean pillow. It’s hanging that washing outside, letting it dry in the air, bringing it back in smelling like nothing but fresh. That feeling is what resets me.
To someone else, that might sound dull and for others it might just be part of everyday life but that’s exactly the point. For me, the little things are the big things, if that’s where you find yourself.
We’ve somehow been conditioned to believe that if something doesn’t look impressive, aesthetic, or worthy of sharing online, it doesn’t count. That if your way of unwinding isn’t glamorous and over the top, it’s less valid but who are we performing for?
There isn’t a need to justify what makes you feel like yourself again. Spend your time how you want, spend your money how you want and choose the things that bring you back to centre. Even if they look indulgent, boring, or unnecessary from the outside.
At the end of it all, no one else is living in your body, carrying your mental load, or navigating your life. Stop measuring your version of ‘feeling good‘ against someone else’s who has a completely different life and financial situation. Do what works and what restores you. Do whatevsr makes you feel like you again. There’s no need to apologise.
